E.ON showcases the digital power grids of the future at Elmässan.

Digitalization is rapidly transforming the energy sector, and E.ON aims to stay at the forefront. At Elmässan in Malmö, the company is exhibiting to connect with the industry, test new ideas, and demonstrate how digital tools can make the power grid safer, smarter, and more accessible. The spotlight is on their new platform, Alstermo Online, developed in collaboration with Rejlers.

We spoke with Anette Friberg, Customer Journey Manager, and Jonas Gilhewijk, Business Developer for Technical Documentation in E.ON’s local grid operations, about why this initiative is important and what visitors can expect at their booth.

Why is E.ON exhibiting at Elmässan?

For E.ON, participating in Elmässan is all about dialogue and collaboration with the industry.

“It’s important for us to meet the users of our systems and check how our digital tools work in practice. We look forward to the conversations and the chance to get direct feedback,” says Anette Friberg.

Meeting electricians, installers, and other industry professionals is crucial for developing solutions that truly make a difference in daily work.

The background of Alstermo Online

The Alstermo Online platform was born out of a clear need. E.ON’s previous plans and documentation had become outdated and hadn’t kept pace with technological developments.

Rather than continuing with traditional methods—physical site visits and photo archives—E.ON decided to innovate.

“We wanted to digitize and make our plans and instructions accessible using modern technology. Together with Rejlers, we developed a digital platform where our entire power grid can be visualized in a realistic 3D environment,” explains Jonas Gilhewijk.

Alstermo Online is based on a fictional model of E.ON’s infrastructure, representing everything from substations to customer connections. The model is inspired by E.ON’s real training facility in Alstermo, Småland.

What is Alstermo Online?

In short, Alstermo Online is a cloud-based digital platform that combines:

  • Realistic 3D models of the power grid
  • VR and AR technology
  • Panorama sets for simulation and training
  • Digital documentation replacing physical photos
  • Integration with NIS data and statistics

The platform allows simulation of installations, interactive staff training, and planning of fieldwork. Using AR, digital objects can be placed in real environments—such as when consulting landowners or preparing for an installation.

Practical benefits for electricians and installers

For installers and electricians, Alstermo Online can be a powerful daily tool. It can be used to:

  • View digital plans for how installations should be labeled and marked
  • Visualize solutions for customers clearly
  • Prepare installations before arriving on site
  • Eventually provide guidance on assembly and installation

The goal is to reduce uncertainty, increase efficiency, and improve safety.

Digitalization—a prerequisite for the power grid of the future

E.ON sees digitalization as essential for the evolution of energy systems.

“Digitalization is both a prerequisite and an enabler—for safety, operations, network expansion, and customer communication,” says Jonas.

With tools like Alstermo Online, E.ON can build, maintain, and communicate about the power grid in entirely new ways.

What to expect at the booth at Elmässan

Visitors to E.ON’s booth will get hands-on experience with the platform. You can “fly around” in the digital environment and see a live demonstration of how the platform works in practice.

It will be both a visual and interactive experience.

E.ON’s invitation to the industry

Finally, Jonas sends a clear invitation:

“Welcome to our booth at Elmässan in Malmö—we look forward to meeting you!”

Visit E.ON at booth D:08 at Elmässan in Malmö on February 4–5, 2026.
